Striking out 10 of the first 11 batters?! Yankees Triple-A hurler makes history

April 24th, 2025

In the modern era of baseball, it is said there are three true outcomes: a home run, a strikeout or a walk.

For most of Allan Winans' start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, there seemed to be only one: the K.

The veteran right-hander fanned 10 of the first 11 batters he faced in the RailRiders' 5-0 win over Charlotte at PNC Field, a feat that hasn’t been completed in MLB since at least 1961, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Right from the jump, Winans attacked hitters with the kitchen sink, mixing through his four-seam fastball, sinker, curveball and changeup during the strikeout streak. His putaway pitch, however, was the cambio, as he employed it on nine of his 10 punchouts.

After retiring each of the first six Knights batters by way of the K, Winans faced his first taste of adversity in the third inning. Colson Montgomery -- MLB's No. 36 prospect, the only player to buck the strikeout trend -- took a five pitch walk to lead off the inning and stole second base just a few pitches later.

Despite the bump in the road, Winans stayed on course.

The 29-year-old whiffed each of the next three batters, escaping the inning unscathed. He opened the fourth with one last punchout before allowing a walk and a hit, ending his evening.

Winans, when all was said and done, finished with 10 K’s over 3 2/3 scoreless innings, giving him his third career double-digit punchout outing and first since Aug. 5, 2023.
